Team Golf Off and Running
Author: Ellen Breighner
Team golf is a program for beginner golfers that need a competitive and fun tournament environment to continue to grow and learn in the game of golf. Team golf tournaments have about 5-10 teams of 3-5 kids each team. The format is a 9 hole, two person scramble where each pairings score counts towards their teams overall score. The course is modified for the kids based off their age and ability with courses ranging between 2,300 yards to 1,300 yards. Kids can have their parents on the course with them as caddies to help with pace of play. In addition, parents drive carts for their kids as they walk the duration of the hole. The scoring is then done on a points system. So, the two man team with the lowest 9 hole score receives 200 points, 2nd place 190 points and so on down the list; then the team with the highest combined score wins.
Team golf is a great way to get your kids interested in golf and make it a fun family activity on weekends. The whole family can come out and watch and experience all the fun of junior golf.
Team Golf is the first stop along the SFPGA Junior Tour journey, with the goal of educating new golfers about how to play the game and have fun doing it. The next step in the process is the Links Tour. The Links Tour is a 9 hole individual stroke play tournament for intermediate golfers. These tournaments will prepare kids for the more competitive 18 hole events of the Prep-Tour and then on to the 36 hole events of the Challenge and Champions Tours.
