Tsar, Mahathep and Monssoh Claim the 39th Nicklaus Junior Championship Title
Jupiter, FL - The South Florida PGA Junior Tour administered the 39th Annual Nicklaus Junior Championship this week at Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club’s Medal Course and Mayacoo Lakes Country Club.
With a field of over 150 players, the event marks the fourth major of the 2023 season and one of the most prominent events of the year.
Beginning the tournament at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club, the Girl’s 13-18 division faced challenging course conditions. Vanessa Zepeda of Boca Raton shot 5-over to take the lead by one ahead of Chonpatchsorn Mahathep of Boca Raton.
On Friday at Jonathan’s Landing Medal Course, Mahathep charged back with a tournament-low 73, with the help of a two-under 34 on the back nine. Mahathep’s 77-73–150 total bested Zepeda by two strokes.
In the Boy’s 13-18 division, Pavel Tsar of Palm Beach Gardens maintained a strong lead throughout the event. Due to an incredible back nine finish in round one where he birdied five of his last six holes to shoot a three-under 68.
In the final round at Jonathan’s Landing, Tsar went bogey- free with three-birdies and sealed his win with a 68-69–137 total. Tsar previously won the Nicklaus Junior Championship as an 11-year-old in 2018.
James Earle of Jupiter finished runner- up in the Boy’s 13-18 Division with a two-day total 72-72–144.
Rounding out the event, Axel Monssoh of Miami won the Boy’s 11-12 division with a total 73-72–145, two strokes ahead of Zachary Felton of Estero.
The winner and the runner-up in each age division received special framed, signed scorecards from Jack Nicklaus’ 1986 Masters Tournament victory.
