Crowe Goes Low to Win the Brendan Cunningham Junior Open, Gabby D and Fernanda Carrion Take Girl’s Division
MARCO ISLAND - Oscar Crowe of Boca Raton shot a three-day, 11-under total to win the Brendan Cunningham Junior Open by nine strokes at Hammock Bay Golf & Country Club.
Crowe’s 11-under, highlighted by his opening round 66, is the lowest three-day total in tournament history and the event’s largest margin of victory.
“I am happy with how I played,” said Crowe. “I feel like I stayed in my own zone and kept my head down.”
The event, which honors the late Brendan Cunningham who was a longtime South Florida PGA volunteer, was played over the last three days at Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club, hosting a field of 77 Medalist Tour players for the eighth major of the season.
Crowe, who won the event in 2021 at three-over par, opened with a bogey-free, six-under 66, which is his lowest 18-hole score in a competitive round, to grab the lead and never look back, shooting under par each round.
The Boca Raton Community High School golfer went 10-under on the par 5’s to help secure his first win of the year.
After three rounds and 54-holes, Gabriella D. and Fernanda Carrion were tied at 3-under. Due to the threat of inclement weather, the two were named co-champions.
Gabby of Palm Beach Gardens fired a tournament low round of 6-under 66 in the first round, setting herself well ahead of the field going into the next two rounds. Following an even-par 72 in the second round and a 3-over 75 in the final round, Gabby wrapped play at 3-under.
Carrion of Coral Gables carded three consistent rounds of even-par 72 in the first round, one-under 71 in the second and the final round low of two-under 70 to match Gabby.
Ryan Nana Tanke of Palm Beach Gardens finished in second with a two-under 214 (69-72-73), while his brother, Chris, won the Boy’s 11-12 Division at three-under 213 (60-70-74). Chris Nana Tanke edged Zachary Felton of Estero by a stroke.
